Have you noticed that by this time last year, we had three different Best Actress contenders with specialty promotional shots? Read: not just any kind where a photog shows up during the shoot to snap a few pictures, but the kind where they do up the actors deliberately to "show off" the actress as the character like they did with The Iron Lady, My Week with Marilyn, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Early bird onset photos were also leaked from Albert Nobbs to tease interested parties with Glenn Close's transformation. This year, we just had early materials from Anna Karenina and The Great Gatsby. Best in show so far is Great Expectations, but everyone seems to think (if the source material is any indication) that Helena Bonham Carter will be supporting as Miss Havisham. But, they set the bar on doing things right this year. So, there you are. Bonham Carter will be walking home an Oscar winner. The writing is on the wall. Or will Anne Hathaway?
The other productions which have followed Expectation's footsteps don't inspire much confidence. I mean, come on, if I was one of the producers on Lovelace or Hyde Park on Hudson, I would be doing that shit up. Why else make the movies to begin with, if they're not something to be proud of, right? After all, Seyfried and Linney are playing real life people from time-eras with very distinct fashions. Give their Oscar campaigns the early five-star treatment. Or perhaps Lovelace is going to be a bomb after all and it was just an excuse to sex Seyfried up and let her play with a 70's wardrobe while she's not, you know, naked. If that's the case, then, come on. But, as far as Linney, most don't know who Margaret Suckley (pronounced Sook-lee) is, including myself. But, there isn't any reason they couldn't have had a photo session with the actors in character playing dress-up with some sharp art direction and spread them around the internet. They did do some shots, but they were just so blah and uninspired, more documentation then anything else. At least, try to create some interest or show that you're invested in pushing your product. How expensive could it cost? I mean, exactly where is an iconic shot of Sandra Bullock in space? Do you feel me? Whose getting paid to not do their job and why are they dropping the ball?
Exhibit A: the Entertainment Weekly cover of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss exactly TEN months before the release of The Hunger Games. Now, that project was a different beast, but there isn't any reason why other films of varying genres and target audiences can't take a page out of their book. Ryan Adams over at AD commented on the many different ways John Carter failed leading up to its release, where Prometheus has been giving its audience little scraps here and there, building an interest. It's not rocket science. It's Marketing 101. He said in not so many words, "If you don't care, why should we?" And, that's exactly my point here.
At any rate, right now, the prospects have so many holes. Keira Knightley (and her cast) will not be doing Russian accents on a period film with very little art direction, that sounds quite experimental. Carey Mulligan + big budget literary adaptation are a lethal combination, but the promo shots themselves draw little confidence thus far. (But, I can't knock them for trying, right?) I never thought I'd live to see the day Helen Hunt's name gets thrown back into the Oscar conversation. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a new face who was very recently in The Thing remake (or prequel or whatever they called it). And Rachel Weisz, right now, appears to be one of the slot-fillers nobody ever goes to see (i.e. Jessica Lange in Blue Sky) if it turns out to be an uncompetitive year. What level of quality will Won't Back Down meet, who is the lead, and, if it's Viola Davis, will she ride last year's snub to a nomination?
