Happy Birthday Suitless: Kate Hudson
Posted on 12:50 AM by Unknown
Celebuspawn seem like they're everywhere these days, and, while they've always existed, Kate Hudson has been one of those rare birds that managed to make it all the way to an Oscar ceremony as a nominee. Best Supporting Actress winner Goldie Hawn's daughter was expected to win that year, but lost, having split the vote with costar Frances McDormand in Almost Famous. She would nip any hopes of becoming a major dramatic actress with the poorly received The Four Feathers. But, she was pretty, young, and white, so she had no problem using her existing momentum to lead roles in banal, expensive Hollywood films. Originally supposed to star Gwyneth Paltrow, Hudson inexplicably opened How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Matthew McConaughey to over $100M domestic. She would never reach that level of commercial success ever again. Even a movie reunion with McConaughey would fall short. The billboards for Fool's Gold would also airbrush Hudson's body to an unsexy, sickly skeleton-thin size. No pressure to all the young impressionable girls out there, right?
Most of her movies are big money losers and she doesn't have the greatest range, but she continues to get hired. Her best movie is The Skeleton Key (I wasn't a fan of Famous). It's a fun suspense thriller with a killer twist ending. I also find her somewhat appealing in comedic films where she isn't the central star. She worked quite well off Anne Hathaway in the poorly written Bride Wars. Even with the formulaic plot, there was an underrated bitchy energy that they both reveled in and was a joy to watch. She even managed to stick out (just a little) in the truly awful, dated, and judgmental Something Borrowed. Whatever the case, female costars suit her well. She has The Reluctant Fundamentalist in the can and upcoming projects may include Me and My Shadow as well as her Geena Davis-aspiration to be an action heroine in Everly. Tomorrow, she joins Claire Danes in her Jesus year and turns 33.
