Ladies First

In Julia Loktev's The Loneliest Planet, a Georgian guide Dato (Bidzina Gujabidze) takes two backpackers Alex (Gael García Bernal) and Nica (Hani Furstenberg) through the Caucasus Mountains. The film is filled with lingering distant gazes on the landscape and unexciting documentation of each of their days spent hiking through unadulterated Mother Nature. To break up the monotony, there is some minimal sexual content of a graphic nature, including a fellatio scene. There's little, if any plot. And don't fret over which language it's in, because few words are ever spoken, as each character possesses a different mother tongue. Though, it does help to be familiar with Georgian during a pivotal scene where knowing what's being said adds nuance to the film, otherwise you're SOL. Planet is labeled in the IMDb as a thriller. That's being very generous. There is actually exactly one event that happens that can be constituted as "thrilling." You have to wait almost an hour for it and it doesn't last very long. While it has a dramatic effect on the two love birds, I can't say that I could relate to their predicament. But, the film does answer the age old question if chivalry is dead.
