As we all know, many actors do commercials overseas to make some quick cash, while maintaining their "credibility" with mainstream audiences inside U.S. borders. The results are often cheesy, and sometimes even spin a hypocritical twist into a star's lifestyle. Earlier this year, ads went up of Gwyneth Paltrow pushing frozen food in German ("I'm not a vegetarian, but I LOVE vegetables!"). It's comical in the context of how Paltrow is a bit of a food snob and used to be exclusively macrobiotic before she realized it was incompatible with motherhood. While there are plenty of people who make fun of her and this ad, thanks to the internet, it's not like most people really care enough to know. But, the "real time" element of these revelations is intriguing in the context of a glowing global village. Will celebrities still have places to "hide" like this, when it comes to sprucing up their bank accounts? Whatever the case, occasionally, the results are kind of cute and entertaining and nothing to be ashamed of.
Take Jennifer Aniston, who conjures up her old Rachel character (well, that's kind of what she does whenever she acts)--albeit hyped up on coffee--for an internet tool Sky Broadband ad. The masterful editing pairs well with her twitchy performance. It's actually the best work she has done since Friends (Well, she was also pretty fun in Horrible Bosses). The filmmakers definitely knew how to capitalize on her talents. I actually caught some of Leprechaun, a truly awful horror film about an Irish little person in green who terrorizes a group of people during a hunt for his stolen gold. She made that movie in 1993 right before she got cast in her hit TV show, but she really dedicates herself to the role, like her life depended on it. Pretty impressive performance, but not worth watching a really bad movie. I guess it proves that then like now, there are just a lot of bad scripts people want to produce and, sometimes, the best work comes from the strangest places.
