Do I have it wrong? Should I be weighing Captain Phillips' chances at the Oscars greater than The Monuments Men and American Hustle, like Nat over at The Film Experience? (He's foregone both films for Foxcatcher). Brad Brevet over at Rope of Silicon seems to think Sony will get four films in the Top Six. The trailer just released, and, as you can expect from Paul Greengrass, it looks INTENSE! I don't know about Tom Hanks' Boston accent, however. Greengrass first won favor with the AMPAS in 2006, for direction, as well as his film United 93 picking up an editing nod. A year later, his Bourne Ultimatum would win all three of its Oscar nods. His followup The Green Zone would fail miserably with audiences, critics, and The Academy. One thing that didn't occur to me about Phillips' in the context of Zone was that the latter was very liberal and divisive in its politics, as well as its facts. With Phillips, we get a real apolitical hero, played by Hanks. Good and evil is very black and white here, and American patriotism isn't on trial. Definitely didn't dawn on me until now. Will Monuments and Hustle match its game? (Or will one of them conveniently duck out until 2014?) I had Phillips at #11 at March. Perhaps it's time for a promotion. Sony definitely has made things somewhat complicated this year.
Kevin Spacey and Scott Rudin are two of the producers. Christopher Rouse is Greengrasses' long-term Oscar-winning editor. Cinematographer Barry Ackroyd (The Hurt Locker) also has worked with him extensively. Henry Jackman is the composer. Paul Kirby is the production designer and Mark Bridges (The Artist) the costume designer. Filmed a year ago in Massachusetts Virgina, Malta, Morocco, and England, the movie is one of the few Best Picture contenders with a release date outside of the holidays (October 11th).
